The UN Environment Program (UNEP) has appointed a number of actors, actresses and other famous people as Goodwill Ambassadors. Actor Don Cheadle, star of Hotel Rwanda, was appointed in a ceremony in Rwanda on June 5. His role is to influence the movie industry to promote sustainable lifestyles.
It is an honour to welcome such an icon as Don Cheadle to this important role. UNEP does not appoint Goodwill Ambassadors lightly. Through his humanitarian work and his passion for the environment, Mr. Cheadle will raise green awareness among millions of people around the planet and draw attention to ways we can deal with issues like pollution and environmental-based conflict.—Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director
On July 5, in Shanghai, Chinese actress Li Bingbing was appointed as national Goodwill Ambassador in China. She already works to mobilize the public to lead greener lifestyles. On receiving the appointment she said, “I am honored to have this opportunity to work with UNEP on the environment. I am an environmentalist in my personal life and I try to share this passion with my fans and the wider public.”
