Twenty-four students in the MA in Global Development & Peace program at University of Bridgeport attended an afternoon of briefings at the United Nations on Friday November 30, 2012. The briefings – The Global Compact, Small Arms and Disarmament, and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea – were given by Mr. Sean Cruse, Mr. Hideki Matsuno, and Ms. Vita Onwuasoanya from the Global Compact, Office of Political Affairs, and Office of Legal Affairs respectively.
The briefings included an update about the Global Compact, how controlling and regulating transfers of small arms and light weapons can help development efforts, and linkages between the Law of the Sea Convention and development, especially the Secretary-General’s Ocean Compact, the first report of which is to be presented to the General Assembly in 2014.
The group was accompanied by Dr. Robert J. Riggs, Assistant Professor of World Religions, and Dr. Dave O. Benjamin, Associate Professor of Global Development.
This visit for briefings followed one on October 12 by students in the BA in International Political Economy & Diplomacy programme, accompanied by Drs. Chunjuan Nancy Wei, Steve Hess, and Dave O. Benjamin.
