Undergraduates in the International Political Economy and Diplomacy program at University of Bridgeport were guests of the Department of Public Information at the United Nations on Friday 1 November 2013, when they attended Briefings at UN Headquarters. The first of two briefings was given by Dr. Randy Rydell, Senior Political Affairs Officer in the Office of the High Representative for Disarmament, who addressed disarmament and chemical weapons more specifically.
Thereafter, the students attended a forum discussion hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations and United Nations Academic Impact, “Biology’s Brave New World: Looking Toward Threats to Global Health,” moderated by Mr. Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, with Ms. Laurie Garrett, Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations as the Speaker, and Dr. Jacob Kumaresan, Executive Director of the World Health Organization Office in New York, who was commentator. UB students posed challenging questions and participated in the discussion, addressing some of the challenges to health faced by states and the international community.
The group was accompanied by Dr. Chunjuan Nancy Wei, Associate Professor of International Political Economy & Diplomacy and Chair of the BA in IPED, and Dr. Robert J. Riggs, Assistant Professor of World Religions.
